Introduction to Algorithms
by T. H. Cormen, C. E. Leiserson and R. L. Rivest

Prerequisite:
CS 3233 Discrete Mathematics or the equivalent

Course Content:
Basic design and analysis of algorithms. For a detailed outline of topics see http://vip.cs.utsa.edu/classes/cs5633f96/topics.html

Grading:
35% Homework
25% Midterm exam
35% Final exam (Wednesday, December 11, 8:00 p.m. - 10:45 p.m.)

Weekly homework assignments will generally be given on Mondays and handed in on Wednesday of the following week. Some of the work will be graded in detail, while other work will be checked off if the student has a solution. The instructor will not inform the class which problems will be graded in detail, but she will select the problems before starting to grade the homework. Solutions will be posted to some of the problems. Certain homework assignments will require using tools such at MatLab.

Scholastic Dishonesty:
The integrity of a university degree depends on the integrity of the work done for that degree by each student. The University expects a student to maintain a high standard of individual honor in his/her scholastic work.

In practice, for this course, you must work independently on the homework assignments. Copying any part of another student's work is considered a serious offense and will be dealt with accordingly.

General:
Friday, October 25, is the last day to drop this course. No make-up exams will be given except for university sanctioned excused absences. If you must miss an exam (for a good reason), it is your responsibility to contact me before the exam, or as soon after the exam as possible. Leave a message at the above number or send me email.

Attendance in class is not required but students are responsible for all material covered in class. The class newsgroups are utsa.cs.5633 and utsa.cs.5633.d. The first group is for instructor postings only, while the second is for student posting and discussion. Students should read the utsa.cs.5633 newsgroup every time they log in. The class web page is http://vip.cs.utsa.edu/classes/cs5633f96/overview.html. You should put a netscape bookmark at that page for easy access. Class information and assignments will be posted on that page. You are responsible for reading the newsgroup and the web page.

Late assignment will not be accepted. Hand in whatever you have on the due date for partial credit. (Some assignments will be due at the beginning of class while others must be handed in by midnight.) On the top sheet of all assignments handed in there should be a statement indicating exactly what parts of the assignment were completed and what parts were not. If something was not completed, but you attempted to do it, indicate what you did for partial credit.
