The Problem: On February 28, 2002 my Windows XP machine spontaneously rebooted when I tried to open an MS Word file. (I had just finished installing some software that supposedly did not require rebooting after installation. However, most of the time when there is a problem, the system just hangs... this was an actual, OS-initiated reboot.)
When the system came up, a window appeared informing me that a fatal error had occurred:
System has recovered from a serious errorand that my system was connecting to the Microsoft Crash Analysis Site (oca.microsoft.com). I was informed that I would need to enter my Passport account information if I wanted to track the error, but that this information would only be used for this purpose.
About 15 minutes later I received the following message:
