CS 5523 Operating Systems

This course is concerned with the principles and implementation of the software necessary to manage system resources, particularly in a distributed environment. A core knowledge of basic operating systems concepts (virtual memory, I/O, process management and communication) is assumed. A strong C/Unix background is also assumed. Some programming will be also be done in Java. Course topics include:

• System Models: organization (client-server, WWW, proxies, peer processes, agents), resource management and performance

• Networks and Communication: protocols, routing, API for Internet protocols, data representation and marshalling

• Distributed Objects: remote invocation and objects, RPC, events and notifications

• Operating System Support: basic OS services, protection, processes and threads, synchronization

• Security: cryptographic algorithms, public key encryption and digital signatures, hybrid protocols

• Distributed File Systems: requirements for distributed file systems, NFS, Andrew

• Name Services: DNS, directory and discovery services

• Future Developments
