Laboratory 1 [1/12; 1/14; 1/21]: Introduction to the Sun Laboratory

Laboratory 1 is an introduction to the Sun laboratory, the windows system, and the mechanics of assembling programs. The Sun laboratory is located in room 3.02.04SB. The first laboratory meets in this room rather than the classroom.

If you do not already have an account on the CS Sun network, fill out and sign the account form.
If you are unfamiliar with the UNIX environment you should purchase a UNIX book such as UNIX SYSTEM V A Practical Guide by M. Sobell. (This book is used in CS 1713.)
You should be familiar with the following UNIX utilities and programs:
- vi - for editing
- make - for compiling programs
- lint - for checking consistency
- mail - for sending mail
- rn or tin - for reading news
- netscape - for accessing the world wide web
- open windows - the windowing environment on Sun workstations
If you are a new user, you may want to download this sample .cshrc as your .cshrc
Set up a personal homepage and register it by following these directions.
Send an email to your instructor (krobbins@runner.utsa.edu) giving your web page URL and your preferred email address.
We will be using the MIPS simulator xspim to run our MIPS assembly language. The documentation for this simulator can be found at ftp://vip.cs.utsa.edu/pub/classes/cs2734s98/spim.ps. Put a bookmark or link to this documentation for easy reference.
Create a cs2734/lab1 directory in your home directory.
Download the MIPS assembly language test program tt.bare.s into your ~/cs2734/lab1 directory.
Run the simulator on tt.bare.s by typing:
```
    xspim -bare -file tt.bare.s
```
When the simulator comes up, click on step to execute one instruction at a time or run to execute the entire program. Compare the results to those in tt.bare.OK.

To get checked off in this laboratory:
- Demonstrate that you have gotten to the class homepage.
- Show that you have downloaded and run the sample source code.
- Demonstrate that you have set up your web page.
- Send an email to your instructor.
- Print out a copy of tt.bare.s and bring it to class on Wednesday, January 21, 1998.
